San Juan Bautista Cuauhtinchan
PUEBLA, MEXICO
The Franciscan Convent of Cuauhtinchan was built between 1528 and 1554 as part of a major campaign to carry out the conversion of Mexico’s indigenous peoples to Catholicism. In addition to its church and convent, the religious complex includes an atrium, a pilgrims’ portal, a garden, and a cemetery. The main altar within the church—a large triptych—is the oldest surviving work of its kind in Mexico.
As a key stop on the Franciscan pilgrimage route through Puebla—together with Tecali and Tepeaca—the convent is an important national monument. Nonetheless, the complex is currently suffering FROM a host of conservation problems, many the result of high humidity, which has caused the main altar to shrink and crack and its structural elements to be displaced, while mural paintings within the sanctuary have been covered with a lime wash. The accumulation of dirt and guano together with natural aging, biological attack, and inadequate maintenance have compounded the damage not only to the church but to the entire complex.
Since 1992, the convent complex has been used not only for religious purposes but also as a museum. Although ICOMOS Mexico carried out a conditions assessment of the sixteenth-century altar, far more is needed if the site is to survive. A local friends GROUP has proposed a restoration masterplan, which includes measures to reduce damaging humidity, conserve the altarpiece and murals, and stabilize the whole of the complex in hopes that it may see increased tourism, which would benefit the local community. Sufficient funds for its implementation, however, have yet to be secured.
